Research & Development

HIK Abalone Farm prides itself on being an industry leader in conducting and facilitating research on abalone (Haliotis midae) and other species. Our continued research efforts have led to vast improvements in the productivity, efficiency and sustainability of abalone farming in South Africa. Identification of other potential aquaculture species is a major research priority, and supports our strategic diversification objectives. HIK and its subsidiary companies maintain excellent relationships with academic institutions throughout southern Africa and strongly promote the interaction between industry and aspiring young scientists in the field of aquaculture research. This allows us to achieve broader development goals such as capacity building within the aquaculture industry, while simultaneously improving production techniques.

Our abalone research focus areas include: production techniques, water quality and re-use, diet performance and sustainability, reproductive biology of farmed abalone, and abalone genetics.

Other species identified as key focus areas include: Kob (Argyrosomus japonicus) and sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra).
